MOM SURVEY: Choices in Childbirth and Their Impact on Breastfeeding Practices

I’d like to use this blog as a forum for conducting a survey.
The survey has to do with childbirth experiences and breastfeeding experiences/breast pump usage.  The results of this survey will be made public, with the ultimate goal to place the survey results in a national parenting magazine article.  All comments will remain anaonymous in such a publication.

Here’s the goal:  gain at least one comment from at least one woman in every state…more comments…more women…even better!

PLEASE FORWARD THE LINK TO THIS POST ONTO EVERY CHILDBEARING WOMAN IN EVERY STATE YOU KNOW…THE MORE SURVEY RESPONSES FROM VARIOUS LOCALES, THE BETTER!  Thank you ~

    9. Yes, I worked full time and pumped until she was about 14 months old.
    10. The day after she was born. My nipples were flat and she had trouble latching so I pumped for a day or so until we got her latch fixed. I started pumping regularly (preparing to return to work) at about 3 weeks.
    11. We tried to feed her EBM with both a syringe and a cup, and we tried to latch her on with a nipple shield. What finally worked was nipple shells, after only an hour my nipples were drawn out enough that she latched right on, and we never looked back!

    1. Was your labor/birth started for you by the use of medication or having your bag of waters broken?
    no
    2. Did you have your bag of waters broken for you at some point during your labor?
    no
    3. Did you use any type of pain medication (IV, intrathecal, epidural, other) during your labor/birth experience?
no & yes. Baby was presenting hands first and had not dropped fully. Effort was made to get her to move her hands out of the way but without success. Because of her hand position, her location, and the unknown position of the umbilical cord, it was determined that a c-section was necessary. I was 7cm dilated at the time I entered the operating room and the first pain medication was administered for the surgery. Baby flipped into breach position on the way to the OR.
    4. Did you receive an episiotomy during your baby’s birth (a cut in the tissue between the opening of the vagina and the rectum)?
    no
    5. Was your baby’s heart rate monitored with the fetal monitor during your labor/birth experience?

    7. Did you breast feed your baby after the birth experience described above? (if no, skip to #12)
    yes
    8. How long (days, weeks, months or years) did you breastfeed your baby?
    5 1/2 months
    9. Did you use a breast pump as a part of your breastfeeding experience?
yes..nursing never went smoothly due to several factors. Despite work with a occupational therapist/lactation consultant, my daughter never nursed well so… my breastfeeding experience was predominantly about the pump. Not fun. Very thankful I found a hands free pumping bra and had Facebook to distract me from some of the pumping sessions. :)
    10. When (how many days after birth) did you initiate use of a breast pump?
10-12 days… I think? It was after the first week that it was apparent that she was not getting enough milk and the nursing experience started down the rocky road.
    11. Did you use any additional breastfeeding aids (nipple shield, SNS tube feeder, syringe or cup feeding)?
Tried SNS twice (hated it) then later tried the Lactation aid (flow driven by baby sucking vs. gravity) which worked o.k. but did not seem to improve my milk supply or her enthusiasm for nursing.
